Major Events
1956- Sudan achieves independence from the British and Egyptian Rule
1962- Civil war begins in the South, led by the Anya Nya separatist movement
1972- Under the Addis Ababa peace agreement between the government and the Anya Nya, the South become a self-governing region
1983- Civil war breaks out again in the South involving government forces and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM); led by John Garang
Feb. 2003- Rebels in the Western region of Darfur begin to rise up against the government; Claiming the region has been neglected by the government
Jan. 2004- The Sudan government sends in their army to fight the rebel uprising in Darfur; Refugees start to flee into nearby countries such as Chad
Mar. 2004- Pro-government Arab Janjaweed militias are killing the non-Arabic villagers in Darfur
Sep. 2004- Un says Sudan must accept outside help to protect civilians; US Secretary of State Powell describes the killings as a genocide
Jan. 2005- Government and Southern rebels sign a peace deal, includes a permanent ceasefire and power sharing
Mar. 2005- United Nation Security Council authorizes the right to threaten and/or punish those who violate the ceasefire in Darfur. Sudan's government votes to refer war criminals to International Criminal Court
