The civil war in Sudan began in 1983. During the war, which ended in 2005, two million people were killed and four million were made homeless. The war was mostly fought between the government and the SPLA (Sudanese People's Liberation Army) who wanted control of Southern Sudan. After South Sudan found oil, the government didn’t want them to get all of the wealth and began fighting for the oil so everyone could make money. The Arab fighters from the north of the country also helped the government. Many homes were burnt down and many villages were destroyed. Women and girls were raped, boys were kidnapped to be put to work as slaves.
